WWE DVD Review: WCW’s War Games

WWE recently released a compilation of all the War Games matches from WCW on DVD and Blu Ray. If you are not familiar with the War Games match, think of it as a wild brawl in 2 rings that are both surrounded by cages. The release is definitely worth the price. It is a collection that I think has been long overdue. The best of the best from WCW are all featured in this 3-disc DVD and 2-disc Blu Ray set.

There are 14 War Games matches included and the set is hosted by the War Games creator Dusty Rhodes. Stars from the early days of WCW to the very end are present including Ric Flair and the Four Horsemen, Lex Luger, Sting, The Road Warriors, “Macho Man” Randy Savage, Booker T, Goldberg, Diamond Dallas Page, and “Hollywood” Hulk Hogan and the rest of the nWo.

War Games was the precursor to matches such as Hell in a Cell, the Elimination Chamber, and even the Survivor Series elimination matches. This collection presents every single match and give justice to a great creation. The Blu Ray even has 3 bonus matches, 1 from Smoky Mountain Wrestling and 2 from ECW, that are similar to War Games. These matches are a great bonus and feature The Dudleys, Tommy Dreamer, New Jack, Raven, The Tazmaniac, and Kevin Sullivan.

This is a great collection for wrestling fans, especially those who remember the glory days of WCW in the late 1990’s. My favorite match is from Fall Brawl 1996 and features the nWo and a mystery partner against Ric Flair, Arn Anderson, Lex Luger, and Sting. This is a classic match with plenty of great spots. Even the final War Games match is a great match, even with the lack of talent that was present in the previous entries.

Overall, the War Games collection is a great release. The nostalgia of it makes me wish that Monday nights were like they used to be when I could watch WCW and record WWE or vice versa. I love collections of specialty matches like the Hell in a Cell or Elimination Chamber and this collection fits right in there. It is a must have for fans of WCW and fans in general that like a good, brutal, chaotic match.
