Vin Diesel returns as Riddick
Vin Diesel is taking a break playing Dom from the Fast & Furious series and returning to one of his first big roles. On September 6, Diesel plays Richard B. Riddick in the new film Riddick, the fourth installment in the The Chronicles of Riddick film series. This will be the first time that the science fiction/action series returns to the big screen since 2004. But from the look of the trailer, it will be worth the long wait to see this film.
The character of Riddick first appeared in 2000’s Pitch Black as a dangerous criminal that is being transported to prison when the ship he is on has to crash-land on a desert planet. After escaping, he returns to help the rest of the ship’s crew fight against the predatory aliens that inhabit the planet. Riddick would then return in 2004’s The Chronicles of Riddick, where he would try to evade being captured after the events of the first film.
Following the two live-action movies, the series would return with a made-for-DVD animated movie The Chronicles of Riddick: Dark Fury. Released later in 2004, the animated movie acts as a bridge between the first two films. Right after the events of the first film, Riddick and two other survivors have to deal with a mercenary ship and the captain that wants to freeze Riddick and keep him as part of collection of warriors from around the world.
And now, after nine years of silence, Riddick returns to continue his journey. This time around, Riddick is betrayed by the Necromongers, a religious group that seeks to convert everyone to their beliefs or kill those that refuse. He is left for dead and must fight for survival against alien predators. Soon he is joined by bounty hunters from around the galaxy and uses them to get what he wants. Then he unleashes an attack against those that betrayed him before trying to return to his home planet before it is destroyed.
After gaining a cult following on DVD, series writer and director David Twohy completed a script for the new film and set about adding the chapter to the Riddick series. Returning to the series with Diesel will be actor Karl Urban (Star Trek, The Lord of the Rings series) reprising his role of Vaako. Joining Diesel and Urban will be Jordi Molla (Blow), Katee Sackoff (Halloween: Resurrection), and Dave Batista (The Man with the Iron Fists).
So with less than a month until the release of Riddick, it is about that time for the fans of the series to brush up on the previous films. So pull out those out DVD’s or Blu Ray’s and catch on up the franchise. And if you don’t own them, give the movies a shot. It is a unique series with a unique universe and a great story arch that will continue with the new blockbuster film coming soon.
